Win Shares Calculator

Here is a link to an excel sheet that calculates win shares from team and league statistics. It is set up for the 1984 Angels. If you want to modify it for other teams you'll have to be careful that with a different number of hitters and pitchers on a team that the formuli are still referencing the right cells. This is an incomplete work in progress, and here are a few of the things that are missing:

  • Park factors. You'd need to work this in for a team in an extreme park. The park factor for the 1984 Angels was close to average, so I did without it.
  • Pitcher hitting. Bill James does some special calculations with pitcher hitting, sometimes working that into the pitching win share parts. The 1984 Angels had Reggie! to DH for them, and didn't have to bother with pitcher hitting.
  • Fielding win shares are shown for the composite team total, but not for individual players.
  • Clutch hitting. Win shares awards more claim points to those who hit well with runners in scoring position or homer more often with runners on base. I did not program in these adjustments.
  • For the players on the 1984 Angels, win shares as calculated here are within 0.3 of the results published on BillJamesonline.com. To me that seems close enough.
  • Technical support. I make this spreadsheet available to anyone who visits this site and has interest in playing around with it. If you mess something up then just download a new copy. I will not provide technical support in any way, shape, or form.
  • Win shares is the creation of Bill James, and presumably is copyrighted. If Bill for any reason does not want this calculator available on the internet, I will remove it at his request. As I am a member of BillJamesonline.com, Bill can post the request in the Hey Bill section, and I will remove it if asked.
